TNC has recently adopted 3 non-releasable baby Diamondback Terrapins. These cute little babies were confiscated from an individual who had removed them from their natural habitat.
Diamondback Terrapins are native to NJ & NY in the coastal areas, salt marshes and estuaries. Their population was almost wiped out in the 19th & early 20th century, due to the popularity of turtle soup as well as the destruction of coastal habitats. Over the past several decades conservation efforts have been made to restore the population, to varying degrees of success. The federal conservation status of Diamondback is listed as vulnerable, while they are a species of concern in NJ.
While we do not maintain a zoo, TNC does house a small collection of animals that cannot be released into the wild. These animals will eventually travel to school, scout, library and environmental groups all around the tri-state helping to educate the public on the importance of protecting our natural world, preserving our amazing wildlife and bringing the joy of nature to many nature starved communities.
Caring for these amazing creatures requires thousands of dollars each year so that we may provide food, shelter, medical care, and a nurturing environment for them to live in. It takes a lot of help from people like you!
