Interested in Forest School but have children too young for our school year offerings? Try our Family Forest School program! This 90 minute program will allow children 18 months to 3.5 years and their caregivers time to explore at the pace of young children and become immersed in the environment.

Each week we will set out to visit some of our favorite Forest School play spots and engage in developmentally appropriate nature exploration and experimentation. Our play will be hands-on, messy, and fun! This program will be held outdoors, rain or shine, and is only cancelled in the event of extreme weather, with 1 makeup date available per session. Please dress accordingly! Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Class may not run if there is low registration. Fees are per caregiver/child pair. Siblings may attend with a caregiver/child pair at a reduced rate for the series. No unregistered siblings, please!

All scouts are welcome to step into the night and discover a world of wonder with our Night Hike & Campfire program! It's time to ditch the flashlights and let your senses guide the way. Embark on a journey through the woods, sharpen your night vision, and listen to the symphony of nature's nightlife.

With room for 30 to 60 scouts, leaders, and adult chaperones, this two-hour experience is perfect for bonding and adventure around the fire.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover, substituting a nocturnal animal encounter for the night hike. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Scout families will need a code from their scout leaders. Scout leaders can receive that code from the scouting coordinator by emailing Scouting@tenaflync.org. Other families and members can experience the nighttime woods and campfire at our seasonal family hike around the solstice or equinox.

If your plans change and you can no longer attend, or if you have any questions about your registration, please let us know by emailing us at Scouting@tenaflync.org.  Our staff will process requests within 48 hours.

The TNC Preserve is under invasion and we need your help! Non-native plants have been encroaching into our forest, causing harm to native plants and reducing our biodiversity. Unchecked, these” invasive species” can toxify the soil and shade out native plants. Help remove these pesky plants twice a month with the Forest Defenders!

Learn to identify different invasive species and work with our Land Manager to implement various removal techniques. Forest Defenders is open to adults, teenagers and families. Kids 15 and under must be accompanied by a guardian. Hours spent with the Forest Defenders are eligible for school volunteer requirements. Help Clean Community Green Spaces!

Join Tenafly Nature Center, Tenafly Environmental Commission, Tenafly’s Green Team, and Tenafly High School’s Green Team to lend a hand for a good cause! The trash-a-thon is an annual event that brings community members of all ages together to clean up up garbage and litter found around local streets, parks, and the nature center.

Anyone can volunteer to pick up trash, either as an individual or as a family team.

Meet at Huyler Park for assignments and supplies (walk-up registration accepted)

    ---------------------------------------

    Event Sponsorship is Welcome!

If a person cannot volunteer but wants to support this event they are welcome to sponsor the event.

Similar to a walk-a-thon, where you raise money from sponsors for each mile walked, a trash-a-thon is a way of raising donations for the number of garbage bags filled while we spend a few hours cleaning up our community. Leading up to the day of the cleanup, volunteers are encouraged to collect pledges (donations) from their network. A suggested pledge could range from $5 – $10 per bag of garbage.

All funds raised from Trash-a-thon will be used to support
    Tenafly Nature Center

    How To Sign Up

    • Register: Click the Register button to sign up as a volunteer or sponsor. You may sign up just yourself or your family "team".

    • Collect Pledges: Contact your family, friends, co-workers, community, etc. and ask if they'd like to make a donation. Ask those willing to support your effort to visit here (tncnj.org/event-6109153) to make their pledge/donation. If pledgers would prefer to donate via cash or check, we encourage checks to be made out to the sponsored volunteer, and the volunteer makes a donation through this event on the pledger’s behalf.

If you are not comfortable using the website, please call the TNC office at 201-568-6093 and we will gladly assist you.

    Stirring Up a Storm

Weather is all around us. Some days it’s calm and serene; other days it’s wild as it whips up a storm. Campers focus on the extremes weather can throw our way, from heat waves to droughts, to floods and massive storms. Campers will identify clouds and the types of weather they bring, why it rains instead of snows, and what our future weather could bring.

Projects will be held entirely outdoors, so please dress appropriately. In case of inclement weather, the project will be postponed to the following date.

Projects will be held entirely outdoors, so please dress appropriately. In case of inclement weather, the project will be postponed to the following date.

*Tenafly Public Schools start 8/27/25. We will not be pro-rating*
Is it a plane? Is it a superhero? No, it’s a magnificent flying animal! From birds to butterflies, campers will soar up to the sky and learn about animals that fly. They will get a better understanding of what makes some animals able to take off and why people couldn’t fly (without the use of a machine) even if we glued feathers to our arms and head.

Pre-K must be a minimum of 4 year old. All children must be bathroom independent. For the safety of our staff and campers, TNC staff do not go into the bathroom with campers.
