Discover the surprising variety of trees that can be tapped!
Those acquainted with maple syruping may be surprised to know that there's more to syruping than maples! Join Tenafly Nature Center educators to explore how sap becomes syrup and which local trees can be tapped for their own unique flavors. Families will head outdoors to identify tree species, learn how sap flows, and practice using real tapping tools. We’ll look at maple as our familiar starting point and then explore several other trees that can be tapped, comparing how their sap differs in taste, sweetness, and seasonal flow patterns.

This program will take place both indoors and outdoors; please dress for the weather. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Children under 2 are free. No strollers, please.

Families will head outdoors to identify tree species, learn how sap flows, and practice using real tapping tools. We’ll look at maple as our familiar starting point and then explore several other trees that can be tapped, comparing how their sap differs in taste, sweetness, and seasonal flow patterns.

Perfect for curious kids and adults who enjoy hands-on learning and spending time in the winter woods. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Rain or shine. This program will take place both indoors and outdoors; please dress for the weather. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Children under 2 are free. No strollers, please.

Volunteers play a vital role in checking boundary markers, spotting potential encroachments, and removing litter along the edges closest to homes and roadways. Your time directly supports the long-term protection of this cherished natural space!

This important work happens before spring growth, when leaf-free trees and open terrain make the boundary easiest to navigate. Volunteers will spend at least three hours assisting along specific sections of the preserve.

    Who Can Join

    • Adults comfortable with uneven terrain and moderate hiking (meet at 9:00 am; may be assigned to drive to a boundary location)

    • Teens ages 14+ (meet at 9:00 am; will depart on foot from the TNC Pavilion)

    • Families with younger children (meet at 9:15 am; will walk together from the TNC Pavilion)

    What to Expect

Meet at the TNC Education Pavilion for assignments, supplies, and instructions. This event is fully outdoors, dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring work gloves. Smartphones are helpful for documenting findings. In case of inclement weather, please call 201-568-6093 for updates.

Join the Fight to Protect Our Forest!

The TNC Preserve is under siege by invasive plant species—and we need you to help defend it! These aggressive plants are choking out native species, damaging ecosystems, and threatening our forest’s natural balance.

Twice a month, our Forest Defenders team gathers to clear out these invaders and restore the health of our woodlands. You’ll learn how to identify invasive species and work side-by-side with our expert Land Manager using safe and effective removal techniques. It’s a hands-on, high-impact way to make a real difference in local conservation—and it’s more fun than you think!

Forest Defenders welcomes adults, teens, and families—children 15 and under must be accompanied by a guardian. All hours count toward school or community service requirements. Activities take place entirely outdoors, so please dress for the weather and terrain. In case of inclement weather, sessions will be rescheduled.

Help bring the magic of spring to life!

Join us as a volunteer for our beloved Annual Egg Hunt, a festive, family-friendly tradition that blends outdoor adventure with environmental education.

Volunteers will work alongside TNC Environmental Educators to hide hundreds of beautifully naturally dyed eggs throughout safe areas of the preserve. Once the hunt begins, you’ll help guide families with young children as they search, explore, and learn about the art of camouflage in nature. Your support helps ensure that each program session runs smoothly and joyfully!

Click Here to Register through Bergen Volunteers

Volunteers play a vital role in checking boundary markers, spotting potential encroachments, and removing litter along the edges closest to homes and roadways. Your time directly supports the long-term protection of this cherished natural space!

This important work happens before spring growth, when leaf-free trees and open terrain make the boundary easiest to navigate. Volunteers will spend at least three hours assisting along specific sections of the preserve.

The trash-a-thon is an annual event that brings community members of all ages together to clean up up garbage and litter found around local streets, parks, and the nature center.

    Event Sponsorship is Welcome!

If a person cannot volunteer but wants to support this event they are welcome to sponsor the event.

Similar to a walk-a-thon, where you raise money from sponsors for each mile walked, a trash-a-thon is a way of raising donations for the number of garbage bags filled while we spend a few hours cleaning up our community. Leading up to the day of the cleanup, volunteers are encouraged to collect pledges (donations) from their network. A suggested pledge could range from $5 – $10 per bag of garbage.

All funds raised from Trash-a-thon will be used to support
    Tenafly Nature Center

    How To Sign Up

    • Register: Click the Register button to sign up as a volunteer or sponsor. You may sign up just yourself or your family "team".

    • Collect Pledges: Contact your family, friends, co-workers, community, etc. and ask if they'd like to make a donation. Ask those willing to support your effort to visit here (https://tncnj.org/event-6473947) to make their pledge/donation. If pledgers would prefer to donate via cash or check, we encourage checks to be made out to the sponsored volunteer, and the volunteer makes a donation through this event on the pledger’s behalf.

If you are not comfortable using the website, please call the TNC office at 201-568-6093 and we will gladly assist you.

Families with children ages 3–7 are invited to settle in for a nature-themed story and a surprise visit from one of Tenafly Nature Center’s Animal Ambassadors. Each month brings a brand-new tale and a different animal friend to meet. Will it be a curious turtle, a slithery snake, a tiny owl, or maybe even an adventurous hawk? Come find out as we learn their stories and how they came to call TNC home!

This program is intended for families with children ages 3–7. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The program will take place both indoors and outdoors. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
