Seasonal Programs

Our Seasonal Programs are the perfect way for individual families and adults to enjoy the seasons with TNC!

  • Complete payment is required to hold reservation, we reserve the right to delete incomplete registrations.
  • Program prices are per person (unless otherwise noted). 
  • A minimum registration number is required for select programs to run (programs may be cancelled if minimum is not reached).
  •  = Indicates that the program is held on accessible surfaces for people with mobility challenges. With a weeks notice TNC staff can adapt most programs for people with different abilities.

  • Scout Sunset Hike & Campfire

    All scouts are welcome to step into the night and discover a world of wonder with our Night Hike & Campfire program! It's time to ditch the flashlights and let your senses guide the way. Embark on a journey through the woods, sharpen your night vision, and listen to the symphony of nature's nightlife. With room for 30 to 60 scouts, leaders, and adult chaperones, this two-hour experience is perfect for bonding and adventure around the fire.

    Children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover, substituting a nocturnal animal encounter for the night hike. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Scout families will need a code from their scout leaders. Scout leaders can receive that code from the scouting coordinator by emailing Scouting@tenaflync.org. Other families and members can experience the nighttime woods and campfire at our seasonal family hike around the solstice or equinox.

    Help remove these pesky plants twice a month with the Forest Defenders! Learn to identify different invasive species and work with our Land Manager to implement various removal techniques.

    Forest Defenders is open to adults, teenagers and families. Kids 15 and under must be accompanied by a guardian. Hours spent with the Forest Defenders are eligible for school volunteer requirements. Projects will be held entirely outdoors, so please dress appropriately. In case of inclement weather, the project will be postponed to the following date.

    Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Celebrate the start of summer at our Nature Day Celebration! Join TNC Environmental Educators and our friends from other nature-friendly organizations for a safe, outdoor day of family fun.

    See TNC’s amazing birds of prey, or slither on over to hang with a snake. Make nature art that Monet would be envious of or join the birds in filling the air with songs. Hit the pond on a canoe or join an Environmental Educator for a walk to learn about what our forest has to offer.

    Guests can expect:

    Geology and fossil exploration

    Celebrate the longest day of the year and the official start of the summer with the Tenafly Nature Center!     When I was your age, Pluto was a planet! How did scientists determine it was classified incorrectly? Is there life in outer space? What living conditions are needed for a planet to be habitable? Campers will become astronauts-in-training and explore the secrets of space.

    Solid as a Rock

    Solids, liquids, and…gas! Through daily experiments and observations, campers will have an introduction to the three states of matter. Discovering how heating and cooling elements can change the state of an object, campers will head onto the trails to use the forest as a laboratory.

    Pre-K must be a minimum of 4 year old. All children must be bathroom independent. For the safety of our staff and campers, TNC staff do not go into the bathroom with campers.

    Jr. CIT's 
    7th & 8th grade students can register for our Jr. CIT program! Part camper and part helper, Jr. CITs will be put with our youngest chipmunk campers and assist the counselors. They will gain confidence, learn the ins and outs of working with children, and enjoy all of the same camp fun by hiking, making crafts, and meeting our animal ambassadors.



    We will accept two Jr. CITs for each week of Pre-K & K camp priced at $400/ week.

    A safari is an expedition to observe or hunt down animals in their natural habitat. Campers will grab their backpacks and head out on a safari throughout TNC’s woods. Mammals, amphibians, invertebrates, birds, you name it campers will use their senses to track down local wildlife.

    This week is only 3 days. No camp July 4th & 5th. Fee is pro-rated.

    The fight between good and evil is not just for people with capes, but it is also a dilemma for the planet. Which animals help clean our water and which plants make us sick? Do people do more to help or hurt the environment? By the end of the week, campers will decide what makes a nature hero.

    Animals live with us, around us, and on all seven continents. Campers are introduced to some of the most amazing animals in five of the different classes; amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and mammals. Each child will gain a new understanding of the world after imagining the underwater world of a fish or the soaring abilities of a bird!

  • Family Forest School: Summer Tuesdays

    Interested in Forest School but have children too young for our school year offerings? Try our Family Forest School program! This 90 minute program will allow children 18 months to 3.5 years and their caregivers time to explore at the pace of young children and become immersed in the environment. Each week we will set out to visit some of our favorite Forest School play spots and engage in developmentally appropriate nature exploration and experimentation. Our play will be hands-on, messy, and fun!

    This program will be held outdoors, rain or shine, and is only cancelled in the event of extreme weather. Please dress accordingly! No unregistered siblings, please! Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Class may not run if there is low registration.

    Fees are per caregiver/child pair. Siblings may attend with a caregiver/child pair at a reduced rate for the series. 

    July Option: July 2, 9, 16, and 23 (4 weeks)

     August Option:  6, 13, 20, and 27 (4 weeks)

    Interested in Forest School but have children too young for our school year offerings? Try our Family Forest School program! This 90 minute program will allow children 18 months to 3.5 years and their caregivers time to explore at the pace of young children and become immersed in the environment. Each week we will set out to visit some of our favorite Forest School play spots and engage in developmentally appropriate nature exploration and experimentation. Our play will be hands-on, messy, and fun!

    This program will be held outdoors, rain or shine, and is only cancelled in the event of extreme weather. Please dress accordingly! No unregistered siblings, please! Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Class may not run if there is low registration.

    Fees are per caregiver/child pair. Siblings may attend with a caregiver/child pair at a reduced rate for the series.

    Be alert! Nature can exercise all of a campers senses as they experience the variety of amazing colors and shapes Mother Nature uses to craft a forest. Campers will explore the forest while utilizing several senses and expanding their perception of the amazing diversity found in our natural world.

    Pre-K must be a minimum of 4 year old. All children must be bathroom independent. For the safety of our staff and campers, TNC staff do not go into the bathroom with campers.

    From tadpoles to dragonflies, campers will investigate how animals go through the wonders of metamorphosis and other life cycles. Children will go on an expedition along TNC’s trails and will learn about the many animals that thrive there and their food webs.

    Pre-K must be a minimum of 4 year old. All children must be bathroom independent. For the safety of our staff and campers, TNC staff do not go into the bathroom with campers.

There, we will discover what the climate is like, learn about the local animal species, and gain an appreciation for the people who live in these different environments.

    Why does it snow in winter and rain in the summer? Why do thunder and lightning occur together? What does wind have to do with the temperature? Campers will light up as we learn about what causes our weather and explore the changes to our atmosphere.

    Pre-K must be a minimum of 4 year old. All children must be bathroom independent. For the safety of our staff and campers, TNC staff do not go into the bathroom with campers. 

    • Use the grade your child is entering next September to determine group.
    • Pre-K & K may choose Full days 9:00 am-3:00 pm or Half days. Half days are AM 9:00 am-12:00 pm or PM 12:00 pm-3:00 pm. 
    • Campers may attend multiple weeks. Each week will feature different themes and activities.
    • After registering, primary guardian will receive confirmation emails.
    • Be sure to sign up early; space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    Discover the natural terrain of the Lost Brook Preserve. Experience sections of the trail as you navigate over roots, rocks and streams, through Tenafly Nature Center's nearly 400 acres of wetlands and hardwood forest.

    Five and ten mile race options are available and start times will be staggered into heats. 10 Mile - 9:00 5 Mile - 9:10 Each heat will have a limit of 100 runners. If parking lot is full please park on Hudson Ave. Rain or shine. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    All proceeds will support TNC’s mission to protect open space on and off the trails and to provide environmental education programs.

     When school is out, Pre-K & K kids can keep learning and have fun too! Children will explore TNC woods and trails, make crafts, share stories and play games while learning about the environment.


    Winter-themed activities may include visits with live animals and hiking through the snow. Sign up early. Don't let your child miss out on fun, hands-on nature experiences, outdoor discovery, and the change to explore our native hardwood forest and pond ecosystems.

    Camp will be outdoors. Minimum age 4. Children must be bathroom independent-staff do not go into the restroom with campers. 

    Full Day $100
    Full day is 9:00 am-3:00 pm

    Half Day $65
    Half day is 9:00am-12:00pm or 12:00pm-3:00pm

    Children should bring a refillable water bottle, two snacks, and lunch. Layers and rain gear are recommended (rain boots, jacket, hat, etc.). A participant daily checklist can be found on our school break day camp web page. Rain or shine. 

    To Register:

    1. Current annual Family Membership ($60) is required for all participants in our camp programs. Not a member? Join or renew now and take advantage of what the nature center offers all year round.
    2. Click the Register button, complete the form, and pay with a credit card. 
    3. Wait for your confirmation email and use the link to log into our online health system: PROCARE. (May take up to a week to receive email)
